Side note: Our readings really begin to overlap as we have books of the Bible telling the same stories.
When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. 2 Samuel 5:3 NIV
David is now king. He conquers Jerusalem and takes up residence in the fortress, and builds up the city.
No one accomplishes things of this magnitude without help.
David has waited a long time to become king. He has endured much to this point.
It would have been easy in this moment to declare a holiday and proclaim, "David is Awesome Day" throughout the land. After all, it is good to be king!
Instead David chooses this time to reward the mighty men who have helped him.
David reminds us that no matter what greatness we achieve, we need to be careful to remember all the people that helped us achieve the greatness we have.
In this "all about me" culture that is easy to forget.
Remember all those that have helped you to this point in your life and take time to say, "Thank you!"
And next time you are in the limelight, take time to honor those that helped you get there.
